The 8 Sabbats
The Wheel of the Year tell the death and rebirth of the Lord. In Yule is a new born king, the essence of innocence. He represents the returning light. In Imbolc, he is growing as the days increase. At Ostara he is in his youth, and infatuated with The Maiden. At Beltane he is a man in love with the Maiden. He takes the Goddess for his bride and it is celebrated with maypoles and bonfires. At Midsummer, his marriage is so fully consumated that it becomes a death of sorts. He is mourned at Lammas, and at Mabon, he sleeps in the womb of the Goddess. At Samhain, he waits in the Summerland to be reborn.

Samhein (October 31st)
Samhein (pronounced sow-en or sow-un) is the Pagan New Year. It is the night the veil between the spirit world & our world is thinnest. It's an excellent night divination & communication with the dead. Feasts are held to honour loved ones who have passed on. In Mexican culture, this holiday is referred to as "Dia de los Muertos". Living rooms are decorated with bright crepe paper, candles, and pictures of dead relatives.
Samhein literally means "Summers End". This holiday is also referred to as "Feast of the Dead", "Halloween (from Hallows Eve) & "Ancestor Night". Many people leave cakes, honey, milk & cider out for the fey (fairies). Most pagans even set a place at the table for deceased relatives.
Samhein was "The Last Harvest". The crops were harvested, the animals were somtimes slaughted to the October Moon (the blood moon), and much of the meat and harvest were preserved for the cold winter ahead. Samhein is a time of feasting and celeberating the harvest and the gifts of Earth.
Samhein is perfect for Divination. The veil between the worlds is very thin, and it's easy to communicate with spirits, both human & non.
Most importantly, Samhein is a time to spend with family and to ponder your own mortality. Shrines are set up to honor past relatives decorated with skulls and other symbols of death. It is customary to light a candle for the new year and to let it burn throughout the night.

When the pagans of old refused to give up their pagan practices, the Christians said they could continue their practices, as long as they used the name of their Lord, Jesus Christ. The yule log, made of oak, is burned as a sacrifice of the dead Oak King. Decorate with Holly, to celeberate the arrival of The Holly King. Known as "The Festival of Lights", decorate with as many lights & candles as possible. Don't forget mistletoe!
This time is known as "The Time of Great Darkness". The days grow short, and the nights grow longer. Yule marks the longest, coldest, harshest day of winter. Yule is always celeberated on the Winter Solstice. The Christian holiday Christmas was adapted from the ancient pagan tradition of celebrating the coming of the newborn Sun/Son to light the world.
Pagans at this time bless their animals & crops. Another Pagan Yule traditions? Kissing under the mistletoe, decorating the Christmas Tree, making Wassail, burning a Yule Log, and feasting.
During this night, the longest night of the year, Pagans light as many candles as can be found both to symbolically wait out the death of the Lord and to celebrate the coming of new light. At no other time of the year is light more sacred. Many believe that it is taboo to extinguish any flame or to travel at Yuletide.
