Merry Meet, I will add my thoughts to this one. "To Know." Knowing your intention, your magic, your skills.
"To Will." The will to make it happen, to engage and move the energy.
"To Dare." This is to face your fears, to feel your feelings and to open to Mystery
"To Keep Silence." Several meanings have been hooked to this one. Meaning such as one should not brag or threaten others concerning their talents with magic. keeping silence" as a foundation for activity.... Meditation. That your magic will be oh-so-much-more if it is based in the power of pure intentionality and absolute silence. The old pulling the bow way back before releasing the arrow mentality.
Others attribute the phrase to the Burning Times, and that it was a command of self-preservation - advertising otherworldly powers won one a quick trip to the stake.
It is said to do all four will bring forth a 5th level ..."to go". That is to say Grow in your craft and following the four is the key to true advancement. BB Gypsy

I think it is very valid.. much more so then waring cloaks nd possessing magical names both of which where designed to protect the coven members identiy in case one was taken and touchered.. don't need that any more...
this.. formula for magic is a good on to go by in my opinion.. mostly the silence part. it is not hard to imagine subconscious thoughts and will of others playing a cosmic tug ~O~ war with the energies put out there from our spells causing havoc

I believe that this not only valid, but in some areas necessary still. I can not brodcast that I am Wiccan to anyone here in my small town. I believe (though in can't be proven) that is why no one cared when I left my job with our school district. I hid that fact for almost 10 years...then when I decided that I didn't want to come back, and one of the students asked what my necklace meant I was not given the choice to leave or not. I finished that year and moved my office for the class I taught with Juvenile Probation to their offices. Later that year the same woman who didn't give me a choice to leave the school tried to shut down my classes. She even went to the school board to put restricitons on those taking my classes.
Because of this I have hidden for a very long time...I am tired of hiding from those ignorant people around me that can't accept it.
I completly agree with Gypsy's definitions of To know. to will, and to dare. I think these are the most important parts. If these are not included in what you are doing, you could end up with a large mess on your hands that can't be cleaned up.

I think that these are great to live by when learning and trying to obtain a new level of knowledge regardless of being a witch or not. If you are never silent then you won't hear or process new knowledge coming your way. If you don't have the will to seek out new knowledge then it won't magically come to you. If you don't dare to question then your mind will remain closed and ignorant. If you don't know what your doing then you won't be doing anything. So I think this is a great idea and the first time I have heard it. I love it though. Useful in all things throughoutl life.
