SOOTHING SALVE from The Kitchen Herbalist
A great anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, soothing, healing salve. Use on, scrapes, bites, burns, rashes, scars and general rough skin. Works great on feet and elbows! This salve is great to keep in your purse if you are a mommy (great for diaper rash and life’s little bumps) or if you are an outdoors-person.
The recipe is in parts, which is a common way to find recipes for herbal preparations. You figure out how much volume you need and decide what measurement you will want to use for a part. For example, the olive oil is the volume that we need to assess because it is the base, the herbs are strained OUT of the base, so they do not count towards the total of finished volume, in fact they will reduce it just a bit because some oil will naturally be soaked into the herbs. If we want to end up with a total of 16 oz (2 cups), then we will want a quarter cup to be our part. The reason why is that it takes (8) ¼ cups to make two cups and in the recipe below it calls for 8 parts. So we will use (2) ¼ cup parts for the licorice root, (1) ¼ cup parts for the Comfrey root, etc. The smallest part called for is ¼ cup in this case.
IF I WANTED TO MAKE ONLY 1 CUP TOTAL I would use a 1/8 of a cup for the part measurement and would need (8) 1/8 cup measures (or 1 cup) of olive oil. I hope this is clear.
IF I WANTED TO MAKE 8 GALLONS TOTAL, I would use 1 gallon for the part measurement and would need 8 gallons of olive oil and 1 gallon of, say, comfrey roots......
Ingredients:
Parts are in volume: all herbs are dried
8 parts Olive oil, organic
2 parts Licorice root, cut
1 part Comfrey Roots, cut
3 parts Calendula, flower heads, packed
1 part Comfrey Leaves
1 part Chamomile flowers
2 parts, or to desired consistency Beeswax, grated, not packed
Essential Oils to desired level, then go little stronger for the scent will dissipate a little.
Palmarosa, Lavender,
Frankincense, Chamomile.
Method:
Put the oils and the licorice comfrey roots in a large pot and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes. Add the calendula, comfrey leaves and chamomile and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 30min. Strain using cheese cloth to catch any little particles.
Put oil back into pot over very low heat and add beeswax, stirring until melted. Turn off heat and add essential oil directly into mixture or into the container before you fill it.
Quickly pour into containers (that you already have out and ready to fill). I find it easiest to pour the mixture into a measuring cup first and then into the containers. Work fast!
Leaving jars undisturbed on table, gently set tops on jars but do not screw on. After about 20-30 minutes, the salve will firm up enough to handle, at which time, screw the lids on tightly. Wipe off jars and label.
Ahh!!! Your skin and your loved ones' skin thank you!
