(This will be part of a book I am writing. Only a chapter or so, not the whole story.)
The clear brook bubbled and chirped its way over the rocks and Helvetica watched, calm as can be, as a small creature dipped its head in the water.
She looked around as the foal snorted and drank, taking in the lush valley scene.
Her auburn hair blended with her fiery dress and her vivid green eyes searched.
She stood and petted the little filly to let the creature know it was time to leave.
The filly, Razzara by name, looked up at the woman with amber eyes; questioning her motives.
A twig snapped and Helvetica turned sharply to the direction of the sharp sound.
"You should relax, Priestess. I will not harm you yet."
A man's voice came from the shadows as the imposing owner stepped forth.
"Where is Talidor?"
Helvetica's musical voice was demanding and she stepped in front of Razzara protectively.
"Talidor is safe and sound in my tower, as you must know."
The man sighed exasperatedly.
He talked with his gloved hands, waving them about like an oaf as he spoke. His dark eyes looked apprehensive yet attentive of power. His equally dark hair was covered by his iron helmet and his armour was black and polished.
"Why can I not see him, Derk?"
The man, Derk, smiled serenely, revealing pure white and sharp teeth.
"We had an agreement, Priestess. Talidor offered his powers to us to keep you, and the Emerald Coven, safe."
His gravelly voice seemed to mock and respect her both in time.
Helvetica was annoyed.
"Let me see him, at least."
Razzara nickered behind her and Helvetica lent a hand to the filly to calm her. Razzara immediately quietened.
"Or at least let me speak to Rhododendron."
Derk laughed.
"I was under the impression, Priestess, that you enjoyed being a Priestess."
When Derk paused, Helvetica stared at him suspiciously.
"If you do, then why did you do it?"
Helvetica took in a sharp breath.
"I didn't know-"
"What harm it would cause?"
Derk laughed again and Helvetica felt suddenly trapped.
"Please, Priestess! I thought you were smart! But, believe me, the damage has been done."
Helvetica began shaking her head in denial.
"Rhododendron is dead. You killed her."
"No! I refuse to hear it!"
Tears began to form in Helvetica's eyes and she stared at Derk, still shaking her head. She heaved a sob and covered her mouth, mouthing a 'no' in complete disbelief.
"You refuse to hear the truth? You refuse to know what you are, what you have done?"
Derk's voice thundered at Helvetica and she sank to a heap on the ground, sobbing loudly. Razzara gazed at the woman understandingly.
"Talidor sacrificed all he has for you, and you repay him by killing the High Priestess?"
"It wasn't meant to happen this way."
Helvetica looked up at Derk through her eyes, pleading for some hope - some way to be forgiven.
"Of course not. But it is."
Derk sighed considerately and crouched down to face her.
His voice was now calm and caring.
"Talidor wanted me to give you this, Priestess. He died when the High Priest took his most precious powers."
Helvetica frowned as Derk held out a talisman of a fire ball set in marble stone. The cord was made of horse hair.
She gasped in wonder and gently took it from Derk's hand, the tears she had now dry against her cheeks.
"Even though it was forbidden, Priestess, Talidor loved you. He wanted the best for you all the time."
"It's beautiful."
Helvetica's watery eyes misted over as she moved her eyes over the talisman, her mind absorbing the news of Talidor.
"I'm sorry, Priestess Helvetica."
Derk paused a moment.
"I must take you back to the Coven now. They wish to see you in private."
Helvetica stared at Derk dazedly, seeing through him.
Not one living knew what happened next, most did not want to.
All that was known was that Helvetica awoke to find Razzara looking down at her knowingly, her eyes shining bright in the reflection of a fire.
