My son is eleven, and he is very interested in different aspects of wicca, craft, alchemy, christianity, ect... He is very resistant to fundemental christianity and wants to be involved in what mom is doing. I am slowly teaching him varies simple things, very basic, that we do. I would love to hear how others educate and involve there children in there practices and customs.
He received several Christmas gifts this year that really fueled his interest. He received a book that was perfect for him to start his own Book of Shadows with. This has turned into a great quality time "tradition" for him and myself. I find something every day or two for him to learn, ie blessing candles, clearing negative energy, something simple, and he tries it and adds it to his book. He cherishes his book.
He also received a Athame. This gift is treated differently. At first, I was not really happy about this. I felt it was to dangerous for him to have. And I felt he was to young to treat it properly or understand it. He thought it was the greatest gift in the world. So, I made rules regarding it. He is only allowed to hold it and use it under mine or my mothers supervision. I taught him what an Athame is used for, what it is never to be used for, how sacred it is to the owner. This led us to learning about alters and what should be collected to make your own alter. He is now actively searching for the perfect way to make his own wand.
I taught him how to cleanse and charge his crystals, another Christmas gift. And how to purify and concecrate candles. He really enjoys the candles and incense, both of which he received as Christmas gifts. He seems to benefit from the positive energy and I have finally found something that he enjoys more than cartoons and video games!
Because of his interest in alchemy I found him legend keys to the ancient symbols and a copy of aristotle's transmutation circle. This also has captured his interest. He felt both should be copied to his Book of Shadows!
These are the projects we have undertaken so far and although I had concerns and misgivings, so far, it has actually brought us closer and has been very successful. As he now expects mom to come up with a new adventure to learn every day or two, I would love to hear any suggestions or projects you have tried with your children. One note of caution, children have a natural interest in magick and will often ask for a spell to solve problems. I try to explain the law of three and that spells are very rarely used and only after much thought and meditation, should one attempt that. So far, because he is still learning to meditate, he hasn't got past that yet, lol. Do you teach your children these? I have a hard time with that because he isn't old enough to understand the natural law and the repercussions of such actions. Thanks for any help you can give!!
